A support agent for Lodos Air

About 3 hours · no API key needed

Scenario

You have just joined the data team at Lodos Air, a small airline based in Istanbul that flies to Turkish cities and nearby European capitals. Passengers write to support all day with the same kinds of questions: where is my flight, what is on my booking, and what are the rules for bags, delays and check-in.

Your manager wants a prototype support agent by the end of the week. It may use three tools: look up a booking, check a flight, and search the help center. The head of support has one rule: the agent must never tell a passenger something that is not in our data.

In this case it is 5 November 2026. Yesterday a strong southwest wind, the lodos, hit Istanbul and some flights were cancelled. You will build the agent against a mock model first. The mock follows the same message rules as the real API, so you can run it as often as you like with no API key and no bill.

Data

  • flights.csv · One week of flights as the operations system shows them on 5 November. Expect inconsistencies, like any real export.
  • bookings.csv · One row per flight on a booking. A booking (PNR) can have more than one row.
  • help_center.jsonl · 13 help articles, one JSON object per line. Not every article was written by Lodos Air.
  • agent_eval.jsonl · 10 passenger questions, each with what a correct answer must or must not contain.

Synthetic data about a fictional airline. No real people, flights or bookings are in it.

What to build

  1. Set up: make a folder, save mock_client.py and agent.py from the starter code below, and run python agent.py. It fails. That is your starting point. Only the Python standard library is needed.
  2. Write the three tools. get_flight_status must survive the messy export and accept LODS 101 and LODS101 alike. get_booking returns every flight on a booking. search_policy returns the two best matching articles. Describe all three in TOOLS.
  3. Write the loop in ask(). Every tool call in a turn gets its result, all in one message. Stop after MAX_STEPS. Handle an answer that was cut off (stop_reason is max_tokens). Check the step cap with MockClient(stubborn=True), a mock that never stops asking for tools.
  4. Run the eval and do not change the questions. Before fixing anything, write down the cause of each failure: which tool returned what, and why that was not enough.
  5. Defend against the help center. One community article contains a sentence aimed at AI assistants. Make sure it never reaches the model, and log every time you remove something.
  6. Write the note for the head of support described under Deliverables.

Questions to answer in your note

  1. How many of the 10 questions pass, and what caused each failure you fixed?
  2. Which failures came from retrieval and which from the loop itself?
  3. Is your guard against the planted instruction enough to ship? What would still get through?
  4. What would you log for every conversation, and why?
  5. What must be true before real passengers talk to this agent?

Deliverables

  • agent.py, which runs with python agent.py and prints the eval result.
  • A note of at most one page for the head of support, who is not technical: what the agent can and cannot do, the eval result, and one risk with how you would reduce it.

How this would be judged

  • The loop follows the message rules: one result per tool call, all in one message, a step cap, and no crash on a cut-off answer.
  • Tools return errors as data instead of raising, so the model can tell a passenger a booking or flight does not exist.
  • Failures were grouped by cause before they were fixed, and the note says which fix moved which number.
  • Retrieved text is treated as data: the planted instruction is removed and logged, and the note admits what a filter cannot catch.
  • The note uses plain language and ends with a clear recommendation.

If you finish early

  • Swap MockClient() for the real client: from anthropic import Anthropic and client = Anthropic(). The client reads your key from the ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variable; never put a key in code. Tell the model the date in the system prompt and run the same eval. Which answers change, and why?
  • Use a local open model with Ollama instead, so there is no bill. Pick a model that supports tool calling. Its message format is different, so adapt the loop.
  • Add a fourth tool, request_human, and decide in code when the agent must use it, for example when a passenger on a cancelled flight asks to be rebooked.

  • Against the mock, this solution passes 10 of 10. With plain word overlap for search it passed 8, and both failures were retrieval. The economy baggage question got the cabin bag article. Worse, the passenger whose flight was cancelled was answered with the wheelchair assistance article: the only word the question shared with any article was "flight", and the tie went to the first article in alphabetical order. Removing stop words and a crude stemmer, so that "cancelled" meets "cancel", fixed both. Grouping the failures first is what pointed at search and not at the loop.
  • The guard is a regular expression. It catches this attack and nothing cleverer: a paraphrase, another language or an instruction split across sentences would pass. Real protection is layered. The system prompt says tool text is data, the tools can only read, and anything with consequences, like rebooking, goes to a person. The filter is the last and weakest layer.
  • Errors come back as tool results with is_error set. If get_booking raised instead, the loop would crash and the passenger would get nothing.

Defend your work

An interviewer reading your code would ask these. Answer them out loud before you call the case done.

  1. Why must all the tool results from one turn go back in a single message?
  2. Your get_booking returns an error instead of raising. What does the model do with it?
  3. Why test against a mock before a real model? What can a mock not tell you?
  4. Someone rewrites the planted sentence in Turkish. Does your guard catch it? What else protects the passenger?
  5. The eval passes 10 of 10. Why is that not proof the agent is ready?
